Discover Adelaide One Suburb at a Time – Semaphore

The CBD in Adelaide has plenty to explore but you’ll often find the best hidden gems beyond the heart of the city. Venture into the outer suburbs, and you’ll discover some of the most enjoyable festivals, cultural experiences and food the region has to offer.

In the first of this series, we explore one of our favourite suburbs of Adelaide – Semaphore

Where is Semaphore?
Just 14 kilometres north-west of the CBD will lead you to the nostalgic beachside suburb of Semaphore. Known for its funky atmosphere nestled into Victorian style buildings and historic pubs, Semaphore beach attracts families and those looking to escape the usual city scene and delve a little deeper into the history of the South Australian state.

What Can You Do in Semaphore?

As well as providing excellent food and wine by the way of organic cafes, and pubs serving the finest craft beers, Semaphore is also home to some unique activities. When in Semaphore, be sure to:

  • Try your hand at fishing: The Semaphore Jetty is one of the top jetty fishing spots around. You’ll often find people relaxing off the pier with their lines. You might end up catching your dinner, you might just end up relaxing with a fishing line and a beautiful view, or both.
  • Watch the Navigational ball drop: Semaphore is home to its very own Senital of Sempahore. This beautiful solid stone structure was built in 1875. The black ball located on top drops at 1pm daily to signal ships with vital information about their navigation.
  • Take the Fort Glanville Tourist Railway: Taking the steam locomotive at the Fort Glanville Tourist Railway is a unique experience, and a lot of fun. The National Railway Museum operates this 2km railway from Semaphore to Fort Glanville and departs at the end of the Semaphore Road café strip. Take a coffee and enjoy the sights of the Esplanade and pass through the dues near Fort Glanville and Port Malcolm.
  • Get on the waterslide: The Waterslide complex in Semaphore has been operating for nearly 30 years. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a carnival with fun to be had at the Ferris Wheel, waterslide, mini golf, sideshows and more.

Semaphore’s Community Events

Coined as a boutique, family friendly event, the Semaphore Music Festival is a great event to plan your holiday around. With 3 nights and 4 days of music, sand and sun you’ll find entertainment bursting out of the foreshore and in many of the pubs and hotels along the main street.
